It Started Out a Pallet, It Ended Up a Dresser

Repurposing.

I was doing this before it was the ‘cool’ thing to do.

I grew up in a repurposed house.  Seriously.

My parents were completely into antiques (still are), we shopped thrift stores, scoured garage sales, we ‘inherited’ unique and cool pieces from family and friends – and this is what made up our home décor.

Old antique dressers served as our entertainment center, old hump back trunks were centerpieces in our living room, old wooden phone boxes were art décor, antique and pristine women’s and children’s gloves were showcased as focal points in our family room.

So, you see, I have lived the life of a “repurposer” and things haven’t changed since I’ve moved out and been married – eleven years now.  And if you have read my thought process on being a self-proclaimed DIYer, you’ll know that if there is something that I can find in the store, then that means I can make it at home!

There are many things in my home that I could highlight about my addiction and ways of repurposing, but I’m only going to show you a couple today.

Lets start with pallets.  You know, those ugly wooden box holders that you see behind every store and warehouse in town.

Those.

In the couple years before Hubby and I were married, we got creative and began making furniture from pallets.  I absolutely loved how they turned out.  The look is rustic, natural, raw – just plain cool in my eyes.  I’m very eclectic and find myself discovering beauty in almost any kind of style of décor and furniture.

Almost.

But, I really like this style and it compliments many aspects of my home.

{Here is a dresser that we made from pallets.  It’s solid wood baby!  This means it’s a pain in the woohaw to move by yourself – but it’s awesome.}

{This is a completely cool hallway/entry way desk.  Not that you can only put the desk in those places, but it’s narrow enough to fit in small spaces and it’s storage space is perfect for those small things we always carry around.  Yet, made out of pallets!}IMG_0603

{Now, this has nothing to do with a pallet, but see my A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. new {old} headboard?!  This actually was given to me a couple months ago by my parents.  This thing was a part of my growing up years.  It’s an antique mantle from 1908!  Did you read that….1908!  I had it stored in my basement for the last few months and decided to get creative with it and added it to our bedroom décor.  JE L’ADORE!!!!}

{Now, lookie here!!! The pallet dresser and the antique mantle from 1908!  Together! Beautiful!}

Are you a repurposer?

If not, maybe you should try it out!  It’s fun, inexpensive and it adds charm to your surroundings!

I could also mention that my slight addiction to Pinterest doesn’t help with my repurposing ways.  NOT.ONE.BIT.

Here’s to living green, repurposing and finding charm!

Embrace the beauty surrounding you today!

    Cool stuff!! I am returning to my passion of antiques and rustic for decorating. Kind of left it alone for a while to delve into the “old world” style of decor and decorating, but am going to revive my antique and rustic decorating with it. I can’t wait to decorate our new house and make it into a show home but keep that feeling of peace, tranquility, and coziness in it.

      All you have to do is just combine it all together and make it work. Old world fits with everything you’ve always done. And with a big enough house – and not everything touching, ahem, it will look awesome!

    That’s very neat. I loved the little desk. Really love that old mantle and the way you are using it.

    1. Kari N. says:

      Thank you, Pam! I like to be unique. And anything that gives me more shelf space I’m all for it :o )

  3. Dad says:

    Love the ‘head board’. Glad I kept it. I knew that it would be put to good use, eventually. It only took 20 years.

    1. Kari N. says:

      Hey, you guys used it for many of those twenty years too…Although I like it in my bedroom better :o )

    First, ‘woohaw’ made me seriously giggle b/c…um… I’ve always used that as a slang term for… ya know… your girl parts. Like your annual visit where you get your ‘woohaw’ checked out. LOL!!!

    Second, I’m pinning your pallet dresser. WAAAAAAAAAAAAY COOL! The desk too! Yes, I’m a repurposer, upcycler… whatever you want to call it! I LOVE finding something old and turning it into something usable and cool for my house. I have an old sewing table I am painting and I think I’m going to use it as a desk.

    How hard was it to do that will pallets? Do you have to have a ton of wood-working type tools? I need a tutorial. lol. ;)

    1. Kari N. says:

      Wow, so in FL, woohaw means something different than in CO. Haha! I was talking about other parts – hehe! I want to see your sewing table. I have a sewing table that I use as decor piece in my family room with a lamp and cool silver bowl on it. It’s suppose to look very simple – until the kids fill the bowl with weird objects taht I’m not sure where they find them – but anyhoo! When we made all the pallet furniture we used a planer (sp?), chopsaw, nailgun and biscuit joiner (or you can just use dowels). Then we used a natural stain to bring out the natural wood colors :o ) Hmmm, tutorial.
      No wonder we’re twins, twin! Love it!

    LOVE the Pallet Dresser and the old Mantle headboard together! Life has had me sidetracked for a while but I “found” you on your new blog and absolutely love it!

    1. knewsom says:

      Diana, it’s so good to hear from you! How have you been. Yep, I was sidetracked for a good 10 months – haha! I’ve enjoyed the break though! Do you still have your blog on blogger?

  6. Diana says:

    Yes I still have the blog there. I love your format here. I’ve been considering a change to WordPress myself but wouldn’t know the first place to start. Maybe I’ll figure it out someday. :)
